León, Guanajuato — March 14 — Club Tijuana secured a convincing 3-0 away victory against Club León in a matchup that has long carried significance between the two clubs.
The rivalry dates back to their battles during the years when both teams were fighting for promotion to Mexico’s top division, a history that continues to fuel interest among fans.
Two struggling teams are heading into the match
Despite the historical rivalry, both clubs entered the match facing difficult moments.
León had been dealing with internal issues and inconsistent results under head coach Ignacio Ambriz.
Meanwhile, Tijuana had struggled to convert solid performances into victories, leading to growing frustration among supporters.
Castañeda scores early for Tijuana
The visitors struck quickly in the match.
In the 4th minute, Kevin Castañeda scored the opening goal to give Xolos a 1-0 lead.
From that moment on, Tijuana controlled the pace of the match while León struggled to respond offensively.
Diego “Loquito” Abreu doubles the lead
Tijuana extended its advantage in the 19th minute through Diego Abreu, son of head coach Sebastián Abreu.
The young forward celebrated his first goal for Xolos alongside his father on the sidelines in an emotional moment.
VAR controversy leads to the third goal
The most controversial moment of the match occurred in the 43rd minute.
Referee Katia Itzel García initially allowed play to continue after a foul claim inside the box by Tijuana players. León then scored during the sequence.
However, after a VAR review, the goal was disallowed, and a penalty was awarded to Xolos.
Kevin Castañeda converted the spot kick to score his second goal of the match and make it 3-0 before halftime.
Nacho Ambriz resigns after the match
Following the game, León head coach Ignacio Ambriz shocked reporters by announcing his resignation during the post-match press conference.
“I love this institution… and that is why I have decided to step away,” he said.
Shortly afterward, Club León officially confirmed his departure.
Xolos moves closer to playoff contention
With the win, Club Tijuana collected three valuable points and moved closer to the playoff positions.
The team will now prepare for another away match against Club Necaxa, which could be crucial in their push toward the Liga MX postseason.
