Angel City stuns the NWSL leaders

San Diego Wave FC entered Rivalry Week sitting at the top of the league standings after an outstanding run of performances.

Meanwhile, Angel City FC arrived following several turbulent weeks, including the departure of head coach Alex Straus. Despite the contrasting momentum, rivalry matches often ignore recent form.

Angel City delivered one of the biggest surprises of the weekend with an impressive 2-0 victory in San Diego.

A physical contest from the beginning

The intensity was evident immediately. Gia Corley received an early yellow card in the fifth minute as both teams battled aggressively throughout the opening stages.

Although San Diego controlled possession, Angel City proved far more efficient whenever opportunities appeared.

Maiara Niehues opens the scoring

Angel City capitalized on a defensive mistake in the 17th minute.

Maiara Niehues headed home to give the visitors a deserved 1-0 lead before briefly remaining on the ground following contact during the scoring play. Fortunately, she was able to continue.

Angel City doubles the advantage

San Diego attempted to respond but struggled to create quality chances.

Instead, Ary Borges extended the lead in the 26th minute before celebrating in front of The Sirens, San Diego's supporters' section, with a gesture asking the crowd to be quiet. The celebration immediately became one of the defining moments of the rivalry.

A frustrating night for the Wave

Melanie Barcenas remained one of San Diego's most dangerous attacking players, but the Wave lacked efficiency in front of goal. The situation worsened in the 33rd minute when Jun Endo suffered an injury and was forced to leave the match.

It added another difficult moment to an already frustrating first half for the home side.

The missed penalty ends Wave's hopes

San Diego continued pushing after halftime but struggled to break down Angel City's organized defense. Their best chance arrived in the 86th minute when Lia Godfrey stepped up to take a penalty.

Her effort struck the post, ending San Diego's final realistic opportunity to mount a comeback. It perfectly summarized a night where very little went right for the league leaders.

Wave turns its attention to Kansas City

Following the match, head coach Jonas Eidevall admitted his team failed to perform at the standard they have established throughout the season. While the defeat serves as a disappointing setback, San Diego remains among the top teams in the NWSL and quickly shifts its focus toward the upcoming match against the Kansas City Current.

For the Wave, Rivalry Week ended in disappointment, but the season still offers plenty of opportunities to respond and continue their pursuit of the NWSL title.
