A new beginning after a difficult finish

It is safe to say that the second half of last season was, in simple terms, disappointing for San Diego Wave. Now, just days before the start of the 2026 NWSL season, the California team began its preseason by facing Kansas City Current at the Coachella Valley Invitational, earning a 1-1 draw.

Key departures and new additions

Wave enters this campaign without key players such as Canadian goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan and French star Delphine Cascarino, both decisive contributors last season.

However, the club has added notable reinforcements, including Kiki Pickett, young Colombian goalkeeper Luisa Agudelo, and Brazilian forward Ludmila, who aim to bring energy and depth to the squad.

First-half control

Throughout the first half, Wave controlled the match and created several scoring opportunities. As expected in a preseason opener, there were inaccuracies and a lack of finishing sharpness.

In the 36th minute, after a great collective play between Gia Corley and Dudinha, Gia Corley scored to make it 1-0, reflecting the team’s dominance.

Kansas City equalizes late

The second half offered few chances. Wave lost some of the momentum it had in the first half, allowing Kansas City to gain more initiative.

In the 83rd minute, following a corner kick and a series of rebounds inside the box, Kansas City Current found the 1-1 equalizer.

Evaluation phase continues

It is difficult to draw firm conclusions from the first preseason match. Head coach Jonas Eidevall will continue evaluating the squad and is awaiting visa resolutions for new players in order to have the full team available.

Wave’s next match will take place on Saturday, February 21, against the new NWSL team, Denver Summit. The official 2026 NWSL season opener will be on March 14 against Houston Dash at Snapdragon Stadium.
