San Diego Wave FC Returns From FIFA Break With Hard-Fought 0-0 Draw in North Carolina

Kailen Sheridan earns her 27th career shutout as Wave extends road unbeaten streak to five

Sheridan Solid Once Again

Goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan added another clean sheet to her record, making crucial saves throughout the match to register her 27th career shutout — and her fourth of the 2025 season. The Canadian international was tested multiple times, especially in the second half, but remained a reliable last line of defense.

Wave Nearly Seals It Late

San Diego’s best chance to steal all three points came in the 84th minute, when Makenzy Robbe’s shot smashed off the crossbar, just inches away from a late winner. Earlier in the match, shots from Korbin Albert, Danielle Cascarino, and Grace Corley also threatened the Courage goal but were all denied by a combination of strong saves and last-ditch defending.

In total, San Diego attempted more than a dozen shots, with six on target and three corners in each half, applying consistent pressure. Meanwhile, the Wave's backline, anchored by Sheridan and a rotating defensive unit, kept Courage’s attack at bay.

Physical Match Upon Return

Both teams showed signs of rust after the month-long hiatus, but the match was fiercely competitive. A total of 28 fouls were committed (14 per side), and four players received yellow cards — including Kaitlyn Ascanio of San Diego and Denise O’Sullivan of North Carolina.

Head coach Casey Stoney utilized her bench to full effect, giving minutes to Robbe, Barcenas, and O’Hearn, while tactical changes helped the Wave maintain control in the midfield and limit Courage’s transitions.

What’s Next

The Wave (7-3-4, 25 points) will return home to Snapdragon Stadium next Saturday, August 9, for the annual Rivalry Night presented by Kaiser Permanente. In a can’t-miss West Coast showdown, San Diego will host Angel City FC at 7:00 PM PT. Tickets are available now.
