San Diego Wave and Angel City Draw in Rivalry Weekend
Wave secures a point at home but lets the win slip away in stoppage time
San Diego, August 9, 2025 – San Diego Wave hosted in-state rival Angel City in a highly anticipated Rivalry Weekend matchup. Expectations were high for a tight and competitive game, much like their first meeting of the season, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
A first half marred by injuries
The opening period was disrupted by multiple injuries. In the 18th minute, Morroni was forced off with an injury. For Angel City, Sarah Gorden exited in the 33rd minute, and Jonsdottir had to leave in stoppage time (45’+7) due to concussion protocol. Both teams struggled to create clear chances, and the half ended with a 0-0 scoreline.
Late drama in the second half
It wasn’t until the 84th minute that Makenzy Robbe broke the deadlock with a stunning shot into the top corner after pouncing on a rebound, giving Wave the lead. However, just when it seemed the home side would secure the win, Alanna Kennedy headed in the equalizer at 90’+1 following a well-placed cross, sealing a 1-1 result.
Frustration and standings impact
The draw left Wave players and head coach Jonas visibly frustrated, as they expressed in the post-match press conference. Despite a string of recent draws, the team remains hopeful of getting back to winning ways. With this result, San Diego Wave sits in 4th place in the NWSL standings, tied on 27 points with both the 2nd- and 3rd-place teams.
Strong fan support
Over 15,000 fans packed the stands to welcome Wave back home after the international break, showing unwavering support despite the recent run of results.
