San Diego FC Falls 3-2 to Pachuca in Leagues Cup Debut

The California side showed sparks in attack but succumbed to the Tuzos’ lethal counterattacks in an emotional clash

🔹 A Dominant Start Without Finishing Touch

San Diego, July 29 – San Diego FC played its first-ever match in the Leagues Cup, hosting Mexican powerhouse Pachuca in an action-packed and emotional showdown. Despite controlling possession early and generating several promising chances, Mikey Varas’ squad struggled to finish and was ultimately undone by defensive lapses.

From the first whistle, the home side looked dangerous, particularly through Hirving “Chucky” Lozano, who created problems along both flanks. Still, the opening goal eluded them.

🔹 Pachuca Strikes with Precision

In the 22nd minute, Pachuca struck first with a lightning-fast counterattack to take a 1–0 lead. Just four minutes later, San Diego FC appealed for a penalty after a pull inside the box, but the referee let play continue.

Controversy continued at minute 41 when Pachuca had a second goal ruled out after a VAR review due to offside. Nevertheless, they struck again early in the second half. At minute 48, another swift break saw the visitors double their lead.

🔹 San Diego Shows Heart but Not Enough

San Diego FC kept pushing. At minute 57, Dreyer dribbled into the area, pulled off a series of feints, and hit the post in what could have been a turning point. Just seconds later, they forced another big save from Pachuca’s goalkeeper.

In the 59th minute, another penalty claim by San Diego was denied after a potential stamp inside the box. Minutes later, at 67’, Alexei Domínguez delivered a spectacular goal from distance to make it 3–0 in favor of Pachuca.

🔹 Late Rally, Heated Ending

The final stretch saw San Diego fight back. At minute 88, Boateng headed in a cross to make it 3–1. Then, deep into stoppage time (90+10), they found a second goal to close the gap to 3–2, igniting the home crowd.

The match ended with tempers flaring, as both benches exchanged heated words after a tense and competitive 100 minutes of football.

🔹 Defensive Woes and Tigres Up Next

Pachuca made it clear they are in the Leagues Cup to win, not just participate. For San Diego FC, the result is a wake-up call. Beyond the loss, their goal difference could heavily impact their hopes of advancing in the tournament.

While the scoreline ended up tighter than expected, the defensive issues were evident. With little time to regroup, San Diego will now prepare to host Tigres on Friday in their next group-stage match.
