Violinist Sergey Khachatryan Amazes San Diego with His Talent and Armenian Music
When discussing some of the world's most celebrated violinists, Sergey Khachatryan deserves a place in the conversation. The Armenian virtuoso has earned international recognition for his exceptional talent and musical achievements, performing on one of the most extraordinary instruments a musician can hold: a Stradivarius violin more than 300 years old, valued at over $15 million.
San Diego audiences had the opportunity to experience his artistry during a memorable weekend with the San Diego Symphony, in a program that brought together the intensity of classical music and a glimpse into the soloist's Armenian cultural heritage.
Lasting approximately two hours, the concert featured Aram Khachaturian's Violin Concerto as its centerpiece. Khachatryan's performance was one of the evening's highlights, showcasing his ability to bring energy, sensitivity, and remarkable virtuosity to the music.
One of the most memorable moments came during the encore. Khachatryan surprised the audience with an improvisation on “Dle Yaman,” a piece associated with Armenian composer Komitas Vardapet. It offered a different perspective on the artist, allowing the audience to experience a taste of Armenian musical traditions in an intimate moment that connected his performance to his cultural roots.
The second half of the evening shifted the spotlight to the orchestra. Led by Rafael Payare, the San Diego Symphony performed Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 9, bringing the concert to a powerful conclusion and showcasing the orchestra's impressive sonic range.
This performance was another example of the remarkable work the San Diego Symphony has been doing throughout the season, presenting programs that bring internationally acclaimed musicians together with works capable of introducing audiences to different musical worlds.
The upcoming schedule promises more exciting experiences. The next collaboration between the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and the San Diego Symphony will bring together two distinguished institutions and their musical traditions, creating an opportunity to celebrate the talent and culture of both countries. The program will also feature a free concert at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, opening the door for even more people to experience symphonic music in San Diego.
After an evening like this, one thing is clear: the San Diego Symphony continues to deliver a season worth following closely.
