A disappointing start to the season

San Diego, March 26 — The San Diego Padres opened their 2026 Major League Baseball season with an 8-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers at Petco Park.

Before the game, the organization honored franchise legend Randy Jones, who recently passed away.

Tigers strike early

Detroit wasted no time taking control.

In the first inning, Gleyber Torres drove in the opening run, followed by a double from Kevin McGonigle that brought home Colt Keith and Riley Greene.

Spencer Torkelson added another run to cap a four-run first inning.

Detroit builds commanding lead

With San Diego unable to respond offensively, Detroit extended its lead in the third inning.

Runs from Torkelson and McGonigle made it 6-0, quieting the home crowd.

Padres struggle to respond

The deficit grew even larger in the fifth inning when Dillon Dingler hit a two-run home run to make it 8-0.

San Diego struggled to generate offense and find momentum.

Late effort falls short

The Padres finally got on the board in the sixth inning.

Xander Bogaerts doubled to drive in Fernando Tatis Jr., and later Ramón Laureano hit a solo home run.

However, the comeback attempt came too late, and the game ended 8-2.

Questions after Opening Day loss

Opening Day is usually a celebration, but for the Padres, it turned into a frustrating experience.

The Detroit Tigers delivered a dominant performance, while San Diego is left searching for answers as the season begins.
