Rabat, Morocco – July 26, 2025 — The Super Falcons of Nigeria reaffirmed their dominance in African football, staging an epic comeback from 2-0 down to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 and clinch their record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in front of a stunned home crowd.

🦁 Morocco Shines Early

In front of a packed Olympic Stadium in Rabat, the Atlas Lionesses got off to a dream start. Inspirational captain Ghizlane Chebbak opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a low strike from outside the box that left Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie with no chance.

Just 10 minutes later, Sanaâ Mssoudy doubled the lead after a pinpoint pass from Ibtissam Jraidi, calmly slotting the ball into the bottom right corner. Morocco entered halftime with a 2-0 advantage and the belief that their first-ever WAFCON title was within reach.

But Nigeria didn't panic. Head coach Justin Madugu inspired a second-half resurgence, and his team came out composed and focused after the break.

The turning point arrived in the 62nd minute when a VAR review confirmed a handball by Nouhaila Benzina, resulting in a penalty. Esther Okoronkwo stepped up and converted to make it 2-1.

Nigeria then seized the momentum. In the 71st minute, Okoronkwo turned provider, threading a perfect pass through to Folashade Ijamilusi, who finished neatly with her left foot to bring the game level at 2-2.

With extra time looming, the Super Falcons struck once more. In the 88th minute, substitute Jennifer Echegini connected on a half-volley from an Okoronkwo free-kick to complete the stunning turnaround.

🏆 Nigeria: Queens of the Continent

Morocco fought valiantly in the final moments, but Nigeria’s defense held strong. It was a heartbreaking defeat for Jorge Vilda’s squad, who lose a second straight WAFCON final on home soil.

But this night belonged to the Super Falcons. Ten WAFCON titles now define their legacy, reminding the continent—and the world—that Nigeria remains the undisputed powerhouse in African women’s football.
