Canada's World Cup journey comes to an end
The Canadian National Team had been one of the biggest surprises of the group stage.
After a hard-fought draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina and an impressive 6-0 victory over Qatar, Canada entered the knockout stage full of confidence. However, the injury to midfielder Ismaël Koné during the group stage significantly weakened the team's balance.
Without one of their key players, Canada struggled to reproduce its earlier form and was outplayed by a confident Moroccan side.
Morocco continues their rise
The Morocco National Team entered the Round of 16 carrying strong momentum.
Since their breakthrough performance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Morocco has established itself as one of the strongest national teams outside Europe's traditional powers.
Playing in Houston, the African side once again demonstrated its quality against one of the tournament's host nations.
A physical opening half
The first half was dominated by physical battles and tactical discipline. Canada attempted to compete through intensity but struggled to create meaningful scoring opportunities.
The referee issued six yellow cards during the opening 45 minutes as both teams fought hard for control in midfield. Although the score remained level, Morocco gradually began dictating the pace of the match.
Ounahi breaks the deadlock
Morocco found the breakthrough shortly after halftime. In the 50th minute, Azzedine Ounahi finished confidently to give his side a deserved 1-0 lead.
The goal forced Canada to push forward, creating additional space for Morocco's dangerous counterattacks.
Morocco finishes the job
Canada searched desperately for an equalizer but never managed to threaten consistently.
Instead, Morocco doubled its advantage in the 82nd minute when Ounahi scored his second goal of the night, effectively ending the contest. The second goal completely shifted the momentum and left Canada with little hope of mounting a comeback.
Rahimi seals qualification
Deep into stoppage time, Soufiane Rahimi added a third goal to complete an outstanding Moroccan performance. The 3-0 victory reflected Morocco's superiority throughout the match and secured a deserved place in the quarterfinals.
The first host nation is eliminated
Canada's impressive World Cup journey comes to an end in the Round of 16. Despite an encouraging group-stage campaign, the host nation was unable to overcome a disciplined and clinical Moroccan side.
Meanwhile, Morocco continues proving that its success is no longer a surprise. With another commanding performance, the African nation moves one step closer to another historic World Cup run and firmly establishes itself among the tournament's strongest contenders.
