Mexico opens the 2026 World Baseball Classic with a win over Great Britain
One of the most anticipated international events for baseball fans is the World Baseball Classic, and Mexico finally made its debut in the 2026 edition with an impressive victory over Great Britain.
Before the first pitch, expectations were high for a competitive matchup as both teams looked to begin the tournament on a strong note.
A talented Mexican roster
Mexico entered the tournament with a roster full of talent from Major League Baseball and international baseball.
Key players on the squad include Alejandro Kirk and Randy Arozarena, two stars who have played a major role in the recent growth of Mexican baseball.
A tight game early on
The game started as a tightly contested matchup, with both teams controlling the pace from the mound and limiting offensive opportunities.
Mexico broke the deadlock in the top of the second inning, when Nacho Alvarez scored the first run of the night.
Great Britain responded in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Harry Ford hit a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1.
Jonathan Aranda delivers the turning point
The turning point came in the top of the eighth inning, when Tijuana native Jonathan Aranda launched a powerful home run that shifted momentum completely in Mexico’s favor.
During the play, Jarren Duran and Randy Arozarena also scored, giving Mexico a comfortable 4-1 lead.
Mexico pulls away late
Following Aranda’s home run, Mexico’s offense took full control of the game.
Additional runs came from Alek Thomas, Jared Serna, Nick Gonzales, and Joey Ortiz, extending the lead and sealing an 8-2 victory.
Great Britain was unable to respond to Mexico’s dominant offense and strong pitching performance in the final innings.
Next challenge: Brazil
Mexico’s next game will be Sunday against Brazil, a matchup expected to bring plenty of excitement in the group stage.
However, many fans are already looking ahead to the highly anticipated clash against the United States, a potential showdown between two baseball powerhouses.
