Mexico takes another step toward the knockout stage
The Mexico National Team continued their perfect start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the South Korea National Team in Guadalajara.
After defeating South Africa in the tournament opener, Mexico once again showed defensive discipline and resilience to secure three valuable points.
South Korea entered the match after defeating the Czech Republic and was widely viewed as Mexico's biggest challenger for first place in Group A.
Aguirre adjusts his lineup
Mexico made several changes from the squad that faced South Africa. With César Montes suspended, head coach Javier Aguirre moved Edson Álvarez into central defense and inserted Luis Romo into midfield.
South Korea fielded its strongest available lineup, led by stars Son Heung-min and Lee Kang-in.
Edson delivers early heroics
South Korea created the first major chance of the evening. In the 15th minute, Son Heung-min nearly opened the scoring, but Edson Álvarez produced an outstanding bicycle-kick clearance to keep the match level.
Mexico responded shortly afterward when Roberto Alvarado delivered a dangerous cross that narrowly missed connecting with Julián Quiñones.
The first half ended scoreless despite several dangerous Korean attacks.
Luis Romo capitalizes on a costly mistake
The breakthrough came early in the second half. In the 49th minute, South Korea's goalkeeper failed to secure the ball after colliding with a teammate, leaving it loose inside the penalty area.
Luis Romo reacted first and calmly finished into the empty net to score what would become the match-winning goal.
The midfielder's opportunistic finish ultimately proved decisive.
Mexico closed out the victory
With the lead secured, Mexico managed the final stages effectively.
Substitutes including Orbelín Pineda, Obed Vargas, Santiago Giménez and Israel Reyes helped maintain control and preserve the result.
South Korea pushed for an equalizer but struggled to break through Mexico's organized defensive structure.
First place is within reach
With six points from two matches, Mexico now sits in a commanding position atop Group A.
The victory not only strengthens their chances of advancing but also improves their chances of finishing first and potentially securing a more favorable path in the knockout rounds.
Mexico will close out the group stage against the Czech Republic National Team in Mexico City, while South Korea faces a crucial match against South Africa.
Two matches, two victories, and growing belief—Mexico's World Cup campaign continues to build momentum.
