Mexico completes a historic group stage
After defeating South Korea 1-0 in their previous match, Mexico entered the final group-stage game with an opportunity to achieve something the national team had never accomplished before.
A victory over the Czech Republic would secure a perfect nine-point group stage.
With a packed Estadio Ciudad de México behind them, Javier Aguirre's side embraced the challenge and delivered one of the finest performances in recent Mexican football history.
Aguirre trusts the next generation
Javier Aguirre made several changes to his starting lineup. Seventeen-year-old Gilberto Mora earned his first World Cup start, while Mateo Chávez also joined the starting eleven.
Meanwhile, Brian Gutiérrez began the match on the bench to avoid suspension due to yellow-card accumulation. The changes highlighted the depth and confidence within Mexico's squad.
A difficult beginning
Mexico struggled to establish control during the opening stages. The Czech Republic enjoyed more possession and frustrated the hosts, prompting some impatience from the crowd during the first hydration break.
However, Mexico adjusted well and completely transformed the match after halftime.
Mateo Chávez scores on his World Cup debut
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 55th minute. Making his World Cup debut, Mateo Chávez scored Mexico's opening goal and celebrated with a memorable Dragon Ball fusion celebration alongside Armando "La Hormiga" González.
One of the night's most emotional moments came immediately afterward, as cameras showed Chávez's father celebrating from the stands.
Having once dreamed of representing Mexico himself, he now watched his son score on football's biggest stage.
Julián Quiñones doubles the lead
Mexico continued attacking with confidence. In the 61st minute, Julián Quiñones calmly finished inside the box to extend the lead to 2-0, sending the home crowd into celebration.
At that point, Mexico had complete control of both the match and its place in history.
Guillermo Ochoa receives an unforgettable farewell
Late in the match, Javier Aguirre created one of the tournament's most emotional moments. Legendary goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa entered for the final ten minutes and received a standing ovation from every corner of the stadium.
Even the Czech players applauded his entrance. To make the moment even more special, captain Edson Álvarez handed Ochoa the captain's armband, recognizing one of the greatest goalkeepers in Mexican football history.
Fidalgo seals the victory
There was still time for one final goal. Deep into stoppage time, a move that began with Guillermo Ochoa ended with Álvaro Fidalgo finishing confidently to complete a convincing 3-0 victory.
The celebrations inside the stadium reflected the significance of the achievement.
Mexico makes World Cup history
The victory means far more than simply advancing to the Round of 16. Mexico finishes the group stage with a perfect nine points for the first time in its World Cup history.
In doing so, El Tri becomes only the fifth national team ever to complete a perfect group stage since the FIFA World Cup began nearly 100 years ago.
With experienced leaders, exciting young talents like Gilberto Mora and Mateo Chávez, and growing confidence throughout the squad, Mexico heads into the knockout stage believing this team may be capable of something truly special.
For Mexican supporters, one question is becoming impossible to ignore:
What if this is finally the year?
