San Diego Wave Beat NC Courage 2-1 to Secure Home Playoff Games
San Diego Wave earned a crucial 2-1 victory over NC Courage, securing the opportunity to host playoff games. After clinching a postseason berth last week, the California club has two major goals remaining before the regular season ends: securing home-field advantage throughout the playoffs and competing for the NWSL Shield.
The challenge was significant. NC Courage were fighting to remain in contention for the final playoff spots, but San Diego made its intentions clear from the opening minutes.
In just the fourth minute, Melanie Barcenas showcased one of her greatest strengths, scoring from outside the box to give Wave an early lead. San Diego continued to push forward and doubled its advantage in the 52nd minute, when Trinity Byars, one of the team's standout performers this season, found the back of the net.
NC Courage tried to mount a late comeback and pulled one goal back in the 83rd minute, setting up a tense finish. However, Wave held on to secure three valuable points and strengthen its position heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
The result also had major implications for the NWSL Shield race. With Gotham falling to Washington Spirit, San Diego moved to within one point of the top spot, keeping the battle for first place wide open.
Wave will return home on October 25 to face Boston Legacy. Depending on other results, San Diego could have an opportunity to move into first place and take another significant step toward winning the Shield.
