San Diego Wave Defeat Courage and Move Closer to Hosting Playoffs

With the NWSL playoffs getting closer, every point matters for teams fighting for a position that could allow them to host a playoff match. For San Diego Wave, a win against NC Courage was another important step toward that goal during a special Latina Night at Snapdragon Stadium.

One of the most emotional moments came before kickoff with the return of Kailen Sheridan to San Diego, this time as an NC Courage player following her departure from the Wave. The former San Diego goalkeeper received a warm reception from the crowd, including an ovation during warmups and before the match began.

San Diego immediately showed its intention to control the game. In just the 2nd minute, Melanie Barcenas found the back of the net, but the goal was eventually ruled offside.

The breakthrough finally came in the 23rd minute. After an excellent team sequence, Brooklyn Courtnall delivered a cross into the box, where Gia Corley finished the play to give San Diego a 1-0 lead in her return from injury.

Corley was substituted in the 62nd minute for Laila Harbert, receiving applause from the San Diego crowd. Just minutes later, Barcenas would get her goal. In the 71st minute, she doubled the Wave's advantage to make it 2-0.

NC Courage pulled one back in the 82nd minute when Ashley Sanchez found space and brought the visitors within one. However, San Diego held on during the final minutes to secure a valuable 2-1 victory.

The three points keep San Diego Wave in control of their push to host a playoff match, with the regular season entering its final stretch. Their next challenge comes Friday against Kansas City Current at Snapdragon Stadium, in one of their final home games of the season.

The night also brought disappointing news for San Diego. After the match, it was confirmed that Catarina Macario had been placed on the season-ending injury list, ending hopes of seeing her make her Wave debut this season. Her arrival had generated plenty of excitement among fans, but her debut will now have to wait.
