Xolos Draw Against América as Gil Mora Returns to the Pitch
Tijuana Xolos earned a 1-1 draw against América at Estadio Banorte in a rescheduled match that had been postponed due to the Leagues Cup finals. While the result was important for the border club's playoff hopes, the biggest storyline was the return of Gilberto Mora, who was back in the squad after nearly a month away from the pitch.
Tijuana remains in contention for the final Liga MX playoff spots, hoping to complete a historic season amid growing attention surrounding Mora and his future in Mexican soccer. Against América, Xolos had an opportunity to collect valuable points and show that the team could compete without its young star in the starting lineup.
Excitement surrounding Mora's return began before kickoff, when his inclusion on the bench was confirmed. His presence raised hopes among supporters eager to see one of Mexican soccer's brightest young talents back in action following his waist injury.
The match started well for Xolos. Taking advantage of defensive mistakes by América, Manoel found the opportunity to put the visitors ahead, making it 1-0 and demonstrating why the club brought him in to strengthen its attack this season.
However, the lead did not last long. Borja produced an impressive individual move, getting past “Pue” Gómez and creating the opportunity that led to América's equalizer. The score became 1-1, forcing both sides to search for another breakthrough.
From that point on, the match developed into an end-to-end contest, with both teams creating opportunities but neither managing to score the decisive goal. Gilberto Mora also saw playing time, marking his long-awaited return to action, although he was unable to influence the final score.
During the post-match press conference, Sebastián “Loco” Abreu praised his players and highlighted the team's ability to compete without relying on Mora. His comments addressed questions about whether Xolos can maintain its level when the young midfielder is unavailable.
The draw keeps Tijuana in the playoff positions, but the margin for error remains small. Xolos must now focus on its upcoming matches and demonstrate the consistency needed to hold on to a place in the postseason.
