San Diego FC Eliminated from Playoff Contention After Heavy Defeat to Vancouver
San Diego FC was eliminated from MLS playoff contention after suffering a convincing 4-1 defeat against Vancouver Whitecaps. With Decision Day approaching, the California club needed points to remain in the race for the final playoff spots in the Western Conference. Instead, its postseason hopes came to an end against one of the league's strongest teams.
One of the main talking points before kickoff was another change in goal. Mexican goalkeeper Pablo Sisniega was selected to start for San Diego, continuing the rotation implemented by head coach Mikey Varas during a difficult stretch of the season.
SDFC enjoyed a brief spell of control early in the match, looking to secure a result that would keep its playoff hopes alive. However, in the 24th minute, Cvetković put Vancouver ahead, shifting the momentum in favor of the Canadian side.
From that point on, San Diego struggled to find its rhythm and create effective responses. In the 41st minute, Brian White doubled Vancouver's lead, leaving SDFC with a much steeper challenge heading into halftime.
The situation worsened after the break. Ryan Gauld scored Vancouver's third goal in the 65th minute, before Caicedo added another in the 77th, effectively sealing the result and confirming San Diego FC's elimination from playoff contention.
San Diego managed to pull one goal back in the 82nd minute, when Alvarado scored the team's only goal of the night. However, it was too late to change the outcome, as Vancouver secured a commanding 4-1 victory.
Following the match, Mikey Varas expressed his disappointment during the postgame press conference, acknowledging that the team had let its fans down. His comments reflected the frustration surrounding a season in which San Diego FC failed to maintain the level needed to compete for a postseason spot.
SDFC will now prepare for its final two matches of the season knowing its playoff hopes are over. Although those games can no longer change the team's postseason fate, they provide an opportunity to finish the campaign on a stronger note and begin looking ahead to the club's future.
