San Diego FC defeats Xolos 1-0 in Leagues Cup Matchday 2

After losing their opening Leagues Cup matches, San Diego FC and Xolos entered Matchday 2 needing a victory to keep their tournament hopes alive.

Both teams featured several of their key players, including Gilberto Mora, one of Mexican soccer's brightest young talents. San Diego immediately took control and thought they had scored in the first minute through Anders Dreyer, but the goal was later ruled out following a review.

The breakthrough came in the 21st minute. A mistake during Xolos' buildup and poor defensive coverage allowed 18-year-old Bryan Zamble to capitalize and give San Diego FC a 1-0 lead.

The rest of the match was defined by physical play, fouls, and growing tension. Xolos introduced new signings Panchito González and Manoel, while Gilberto Mora remained on the field until the 85th minute before being substituted due to visible fatigue.

San Diego nearly doubled its advantage in the 90th minute when Anders Dreyer scored again, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

The final whistle confirmed a 1-0 San Diego FC victory, giving the California club its first three points of the Leagues Cup, although its chances of advancing remain slim. For Xolos, the situation is even more difficult, with the Tijuana club now virtually eliminated after two defeats.

Following the match, Sebastián "Loco" Abreu admitted: "We lacked efficiency", while emphasizing that "football is about goals."

Xolos will close its Leagues Cup campaign against Portland Timbers before returning to Liga MX against Cruz Azul on August 16. San Diego FC will next prepare to host Puebla at Snapdragon Stadium.
