Xolos Return to Winning Ways with 4-1 Rout of Santos Laguna
Tijuana Xolos returned to winning form with a commanding 4-1 victory over Santos Laguna at Estadio Caliente. After a series of performances that raised concerns among supporters, the team coached by Sebastián “Loco” Abreu delivered an impressive attacking display at home, keeping its hopes of reaching the Liga MX playoffs alive.
Tijuana entered the match after earning a draw against Toluca at one of the league's toughest venues, a game in which Abreu was sent off. Another major question heading into this matchup was whether Gilberto Mora would return to action, but the young player was ultimately left out of the squad.
Xolos came out attacking from the opening whistle and quickly took control. In the 13th minute, Panchito González opened the scoring, and just five minutes later, in the 18th minute, Nacho Rivero doubled the advantage to give the home side a strong start.
Tijuana controlled much of the match, although Santos attempted to fight its way back in the second half. In the 66th minute, Lozano scored for the visitors, cutting the deficit and briefly putting pressure on the hosts.
Xolos responded in style. Nacho Rivero scored a spectacular free kick to restore a comfortable lead and further cement his status as one of the night's standout performers. Then, in the 78th minute, Adonis Preciado found the net to seal the 4-1 victory and secure three valuable points for Tijuana.
The win provides a much-needed boost at a crucial stage of the season, but the schedule offers little time to celebrate. Xolos face a demanding week, beginning with a home match against América on Wednesday, October 28, in a rescheduled fixture postponed due to Leagues Cup commitments. They will then travel to face Monterrey.
Both matches will present significant challenges for Abreu's squad. With the playoff race tightening, collecting points will be essential if Tijuana hopes to avoid seeing its postseason ambitions slip further away.
