San Diego Wave Draw 2-2 Against Boston Legacy as the Shield Remains Within Reach
San Diego Wave missed the opportunity to secure a home victory after drawing 2-2 against Boston Legacy, leaving the race for the 2026 NWSL Shield open heading into the final matchday of the regular season.
With a playoff spot secured and home-field advantage for the postseason already guaranteed, the California club had another goal in sight: finishing the regular season at the top of the standings. However, Gotham FC remains in contention, meaning Wave must deliver a strong performance in its final match and hope for a favorable result elsewhere.
Although San Diego controlled much of the game, the goals did not arrive until the second half. In the 48th minute, Karich put Boston Legacy ahead, putting pressure on the home side and temporarily complicating Wave's hopes of winning the Shield.
San Diego responded almost immediately. Just three minutes later, in the 51st minute, Gia Corley scored the equalizer to bring Wave back into the game. The hosts continued pressing and completed the turnaround when an own goal by Araujo gave San Diego a 2-1 lead.
Just when Wave appeared poised to claim all three points, Caño found the equalizer in the 73rd minute. San Diego tried to regain the advantage, but neither team managed to score again, and the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
The result keeps Wave's 2026 NWSL Shield hopes alive, although the club now needs a favorable combination of results. A Gotham loss against Utah on Decision Day, combined with a Wave victory over Bay FC on the road, could give San Diego an opportunity to claim the regular-season title.
With one matchday remaining, the NWSL season continues to deliver drama until the very end. Wave must take care of its own business and wait for Gotham's result to discover whether it can cap off an impressive campaign by lifting the Shield.
