León falls 2-1 to New York City and their Leagues Cup hopes are slipping away
The Esmeraldas have just one point from six and now need a miracle to reach the knockout stage
Early blows and no first-half response
New York, August 1 – In a decisive Leagues Cup match, Club León suffered a tough 2-1 loss to New York City FC, missing a key opportunity to gain momentum and get closer to advancing.
The hosts struck early. In the 7th minute, Alonso Martínez capitalized on a defensive lapse to open the scoring after a clever assist from Justin Haak. Then, in the 32nd minute, Agustín Ojeda fired a rocket into the top corner to make it 2-0. Within just 30 minutes, León found themselves in serious trouble.
Missed penalty and a lack of finishing
The second half offered León a golden opportunity to get back into the game. At the 58th minute, they were awarded a penalty, but James Rodríguez was denied by Matt Freese, who saved the low shot from the spot.
León pressed harder with attacking attempts from Ismael Díaz and Ettson Ayón, but NYCFC’s defense remained solid. Rogelio Funes Mori also created danger in the final stretch, yet none of the chances were converted.
A late goal that came too late
Although León controlled possession and generated more chances in the final minutes, the breakthrough came too late. They pushed forward with crosses and long shots, but a lack of precision and urgency cost them dearly.
In the end, the Mexican side looked frustrated and deflated—aware they had let a critical match slip away.
Qualification now hangs by a thread
With this result, León sits at just one point from six possible in group play, placing their future in serious jeopardy. One match remains, but it will take a win and favorable outcomes elsewhere for them to have a chance of progressing.
Beyond the scoreboard, the team’s performance raised concerns. Defensive lapses, lack of connection in attack, and wasted opportunities have left León in a precarious position. A deep reflection is needed before their final group match.
