Inter Miami Defeats Atlas 2-1 with Messi Assist and Weigandt’s Last-Minute Winner
With Messi orchestrating and a stoppage-time goal from Weigandt, Miami opens Leagues Cup 2025 with a thrilling win over Atlas FC
A Tight First Half with Plenty of Attempts
The match between Inter Miami CF and Atlas FC kicked off with high energy and intensity, but neither side could find the back of the net early on. Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, and Telasco Segovia were the most active in attack for the hosts, while Eduardo Aguirre and Arturo González threatened from distance for the visitors.
The best chance of the first half came in stoppage time, when Suárez struck the crossbar. The teams went into halftime tied 0-0 despite numerous efforts.
Messi Takes Charge as Segovia Opens the Scoring
Early in the second half, Inter Miami turned up the pressure and began to find spaces in Atlas' defense. In the 58th minute, after a clever assist from Lionel Messi, Telasco Segovia buried a shot into the top center of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Miami looked in control, dictating the tempo, but a defensive lapse in the 80th minute allowed Rivaldo Lozano to equalize for Atlas with a left-footed shot from the center of the box.
Messi’s Magic and Weigandt’s Winner in Stoppage Time
Just when it seemed like the match would end in a draw, Messi produced a moment of brilliance. In the 96th minute, he broke into the box and slipped a perfect ball to Marcelo Weigandt, who calmly finished into the bottom left corner for the 2-1 winner, sealing a dramatic victory for Inter Miami.
Strong Debut and Key Points for the Group Stage
With this win, Inter Miami CF starts its Leagues Cup campaign with a crucial three points. Beyond the scoreline, the team showed depth in attack, midfield control through Redondo and De Paul, and, as always, Lionel Messi's ability to shift the game in key moments.
Atlas battled hard and had its chances, but couldn't contain Miami’s late surge.
