George Russell wins the Australian Grand Prix as Mercedes dominates the season opener
Melbourne, Australia, March 8. — The 2026 Formula One season officially began with the Australian Grand Prix, where George Russell secured victory and led a dominant 1-2 finish for Mercedes‑AMG Petronas Formula One Team at the Albert Park Circuit.
After an impressive qualifying session from Mercedes, the big question heading into race day was whether the team could maintain that pace during the race.
A race filled with retirements
The race faced issues even before the lights went out. Both Oscar Piastri and Nico Hülkenberg were forced to retire before the start, hinting at a challenging race ahead.
Several teams struggled with reliability as the new 2026 technical regulations appeared to affect multiple cars throughout the race.
Hadjar loses podium hopes
One of the most notable retirements was Isack Hadjar from Red Bull Racing.
After qualifying in an impressive third place, the young driver’s race ended early on lap 11, eliminating his chances of securing a podium in the season opener.
A difficult day for Aston Martin
The Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team also endured a difficult race.
Fernando Alonso retired on lap 15 due to mechanical problems. Although he briefly returned to the track for testing purposes, his race was effectively over.
Later in the race, Lance Stroll also retired on lap 48, completing a disappointing day for the team.
Bottas retires while Pérez struggles
Another retirement came from Valtteri Bottas, reinforcing pre-season concerns about the unpredictability of his car.
Meanwhile, Mexican driver Sergio Pérez, now racing for the Cadillac Formula 1 Team, managed to finish the race but struggled for pace, ending near the back of the grid.
Mercedes confirms its dominance
The story of the race was clearly Mercedes’ dominance.
After locking out the front row in qualifying, George Russell controlled the race and secured the first victory of the 2026 season, while teammate Kimi Antonelli completed the Mercedes 1-2 finish.
The result confirms that the team’s qualifying performance was no coincidence and positions Mercedes as an early championship contender.
Ferrari loses ground due to its strategy
Meanwhile, Scuderia Ferrari appeared capable of challenging for victory but lost ground due to a questionable strategy.
While several teams took advantage of Virtual Safety Car periods to pit, Ferrari opted to keep its drivers on track, a decision that ultimately cost them valuable positions.
An unpredictable start to the season
The opening race of the 2026 season delivered mixed impressions. The race featured several retirements and uncertainty caused by the new technical regulations.
However, it also showed that some teams have taken a significant step forward in performance, setting the stage for what could be a highly competitive championship.
