Colombia start strong in Mexico City
The Colombian National Team opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup journey with a 3-1 victory over the Uzbekistan National Team in a lively match played in Mexico City.
Many view Colombia as one of the dark-horse contenders for the tournament thanks to a talented squad featuring Luis Díaz, James Rodríguez and Daniel Muñoz.
A difficult first half
Despite entering the match as favorites, Colombia found it difficult to break down a disciplined Uzbek side during the opening stages.
The match remained balanced for much of the first half as Uzbekistan frustrated Colombia's attack.
Daniel Muñoz breaks the deadlock
Just before halftime, Daniel Muñoz found the breakthrough. His goal in the 40th minute gave Colombia a 1-0 lead and energized the large Colombian crowd in attendance.
Uzbekistan responds but Luis Díaz answers
The second half began with an unexpected twist. In the 53rd minute, Abbosbek Fayzullaev scored the equalizer to make it 1-1 and briefly put pressure on Colombia.
The response came quickly. At the 65-minute mark, Luis Díaz restored Colombia's lead with a crucial goal that shifted momentum back in favor of the South American side.
Campaz seals the victory
Uzbekistan continued to compete and created moments of danger late in the match.
However, deep into stoppage time, Jaminton Campaz scored Colombia's third goal to secure the 3-1 result.
The late strike put the finishing touch on a successful opening performance.
Positive signs for Colombia
While there are still areas to improve, Colombia's debut offered plenty of reasons for optimism.
