Chivas defeat Atlas in the Clásico Tapatío and sweep the season’s derbies

Guadalajara, Mexico, March 7.Club Deportivo Guadalajara earned a dramatic 2-1 victory over Atlas FC in the Clásico Tapatío, played at the Estadio Jalisco, in a match filled with intensity, controversy, and late drama.

With the win, Chivas has now claimed victory in both major rivalries this season, having previously defeated Club América in the Clásico Nacional.

A rivalry that defines Guadalajara

For fans in Guadalajara, the Clásico Tapatío carries special meaning. The match represents a historic rivalry between the city’s two most iconic clubs.

The match was officiated by Marco Antonio Ortiz, widely known as “Gato” Ortiz, a referee often associated with controversial penalty decisions.

Atlas strikes first

The match began at a high pace, with Atlas pressing aggressively and forcing Chivas into a defensive block.

The pressure paid off in the 12th minute, when a mistake by goalkeeper Raúl Rangel allowed Paulo Ramírez to capitalize and score the opening goal for Atlas.

After conceding, Chivas gradually took control of the match but struggled to create clear chances, relying heavily on crosses that failed to find a target.

Atlas carried their 1-0 lead into halftime.

La Hormiga González levels the match

Chivas came out stronger in the second half and began creating more shooting opportunities.

In the 48th minute, Armando González, nicknamed “La Hormiga,” fired a shot from outside the box that beat Camilo Vargas, tying the match 1-1.

Controversial penalties decide the match

The match turned controversial when referee Marco Antonio Ortiz awarded a penalty to Chivas in the 73rd minute for an alleged pull inside the box.

González stepped up to take the penalty, but Camilo Vargas made an impressive save to keep the score level.

However, controversy returned in the 84th minute when another penalty was awarded to Chivas in a more disputed call.

This time Ángel Sepúlveda stepped up and converted the spot kick, giving Chivas a 2-1 lead.

Chivas secure a major derby win

In the closing minutes, Atlas appeared disorganized and focused more on protesting the referee’s decisions than creating scoring chances.

Despite 10 minutes of stoppage time, Atlas could not find an equalizer, and Chivas secured an important victory.

The result gives the Guadalajara side bragging rights in the city and confirms that they have won both major derbies this season.
