Mexico books its place in the Round of 16

Following a week of celebrations and tremendous support from local fans, Mexico delivered another disciplined performance. A costly mistake by the South Korean goalkeeper allowed Luis Romo to score the winning goal.
The victory makes Mexico the first team to officially qualify for the Round of 16 and places them in an excellent position to finish atop Group A.
Matchday Two begins shaping the tournament
As groups move closer to their conclusion, Matchday Two is beginning to separate contenders from teams fighting for survival.
Mexico has already secured its place in the knockout rounds, Canada showcased its attacking firepower, Switzerland strengthened its qualification hopes and South Africa kept its World Cup dream alive.
The road to the Round of 16 is becoming clearer, but there is still plenty of drama ahead in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
2026 World Cup Daily Recap: June 18
Matchday Two of the 2026 FIFA World Cup continued on June 18 with several important storylines developing across the tournament.
From Mexico securing qualification to Canada's dominant performance and South Africa's dramatic comeback, here are the biggest stories of the day.

South Africa avoids elimination
The South Africa National Team and the Czech Republic National Team entered their Group A clash desperately needing points.
Despite South Africa controlling large portions of the match, the Czech Republic took an early lead through Michal Sadílek. South Africa finally found an equalizer in the 80th minute when Teboho Mokoena converted a penalty to secure a crucial 1-1 draw.
The result keeps both teams alive heading into the final group-stage match.

Switzerland turned a draw into a rout
For 75 minutes, the match between the Switzerland National Team and the Bosnia and Herzegovina National Team appeared destined to end scoreless.
Everything changed after Bosnia received a red card late in the match.
Switzerland took advantage of the extra space and exploded for four goals to secure an impressive 4-1 victory and take a major step toward qualification.

Canada dominates but suffers a major loss
The Canada National Team delivered one of the most dominant performances of the tournament with a 6-0 victory over the Qatar National Team in Vancouver.
However, the celebrations were overshadowed by a serious injury suffered by Ismaël Koné, who is expected to miss the remainder of the tournament.
Canada earned three points in convincing fashion, but the loss of one of its key players leaves concerns moving forward.
